Securing the Homeland

Yorubaland is facing unprecedented challenges:

Yorubaland is in the middle of a security crisis that we did not even witness during the military era. Our people are afraid to venture out of their villages and cities because of the menace of kidnappers. But they are also scared to go to their farms because of the blood-sucking Fulani herdsmen who invade farmlands with their cattle and loathe being challenged by poor farmers. We know that you are aware of everything.

Is the security situation affecting our people at home alone? Are we in the Diaspora immune from the hardship they experience? Obviously not. You probably read the horrific story of one of us who went home with her family and suffered the most humiliating and traumatic experience that we do not wish even for our bitterest enemies. We sigh in disbelief that Nigerians can do such evil to fellow Nigerians. But this has become a daily experience across our land, particularly in the Southwest. How can we not wonder aloud if such experience awaits us anytime we visit!

We know that we are caring people. We know that as Omoluabi, we value our communities. We also know that as intelligent people, we know we have to take necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our families from harm.

This is the reason that Egbe Omo Yoruba is reaching out to you now. We must come together as privileged Yoruba patriots enjoying God-giving comforts in our land of sojourn, but not forgetting our root. It is time for us once again to come to the rescue of our land. Security is the most important function of a government. It is unfortunate that since 1999, our people have not enjoyed the so-called dividend of democracy. But this matter of security is setting off alarm bells all over Yorubaland now. We must act.
